Steve's Review of the Nikon Coolpix 950

I own (and really like) the new Nikon Coolpix 950. It is my fourth digicam (Sony DSC-F1, Olympus D320-L and Olympus D600-L preceeded it). Here are a few random thoughts on the camera, organized into Pros and Cons.

Pros:

  • swivel is cool (works like a waist-level finder or a periscope in difficult shooting situations like school plays, etc)
  • image quality is positively stunning
  • 48MB CF cards are readily available (I have one) for less than $200
  • battery life with NiMH is better than it was with my Olympus D600-L
  • it is pocketable
  • the flash is far better than the awful one from my Olympus D600-L, and quite usable
  • I also have a USB CF reader (for my Mac G3, no less!) that is great (Sandisk Imagemate)
  • Nikon make three accessory lenses (fisheye, wide angle and telephoto) for it
  • Cons:
  • user interface is bizarre
  • camera zooms to full telephoto when it goes to sleep
  • noticeable barrel distortion at the widest angle (approximately 38mm as per Nikon)
  • build quality isn't what it should be in a $1,000 piece of gear (very subjective comment)
  • the ergonomics are finely tuned to some life form with more fingers than the standard complement of ten that we humans have
  • All this said, I really do like the camera.
